I finally made it over to the Huntland ballpark to see the new mural in person, and I have to say…I really like it.
A while back, I threw out the idea of creating a giant set of Hornet wings as a mural. The idea seemed to catch on quickly and got a lot of people talking about doing something unique for Huntland. Things eventually went in a different direction, and that’s perfectly okay. What matters most is that something actually happened.
Huntland deserves things that make people proud of where they’re from, and this mural does exactly that. It gives the ballpark personality, celebrates our community, and is something our kids and future generations can point to and say, “That’s ours.”
If I have one small critique, it’s the Hornet itself.
I understand that real hornets are black and yellow, and the artist did a great job painting it. From a technical standpoint, it looks fantastic. Personally, though, I think it would have been even stronger if the Hornet had been reimagined in Huntland blue and white. The rest of the mural already embraces our school colors, so seeing our mascot in those same colors would have tied the entire piece together and made it feel even more uniquely Huntland rather than simply a realistic insect.
That’s a minor opinion, though.
The bigger picture is that this mural exists at all. For a small town, projects like this matter. They create identity. They become landmarks. They give people something to smile about when they pull into the ballpark.
So, regardless of how it came together, I’m glad it did. Huntland needed something like this, and I hope it’s only the beginning. I’d love to see more public art, more community projects, and more reasons for people to take pride in our little town.
